Preview
The Sacramento Athletics close out the home portion of their regular season schedule — or at least another chapter of it — when the Houston Astros come to Sutter Health Park on Friday, September 25, with first pitch scheduled for 9:40 PM ET. Jacob Lopez gets the ball for the A's against Houston right-hander Hunter Brown in a matchup that carries genuine late-season weight. With the calendar running short on regular season opportunities, every game at this point is a chance to solidify standing, build momentum, and get a look at who this roster is heading into the offseason.
Starting Pitchers: Jacob Lopez vs. Hunter Brown
Jacob Lopez draws the Friday night assignment for Sacramento. The young arm has been part of the A's pitching mix this season, and a start against a Houston lineup that has historically punished mistakes makes this a legitimate measuring-stick moment. Lopez will need to command the strike zone and keep the ball in the park to keep Sutter Health Park rocking into the late innings.
On the other side, Hunter Brown has been one of Houston's more dependable rotation pieces. He generates swings and misses and can run his pitch count efficiently when he's locating. The A's lineup will need to work counts and manufacture traffic early if they want to get into the Astros bullpen before the damage is done.

Keys to Watch
Bolte and Butler Set the Table
The top of the order — Henry Bolte leading off in center and Lawrence Butler batting second in right — is where Sacramento's offensive tone gets established. If those two are getting on base and putting pressure on Brown early, the middle of the order has a chance to do real damage.
Shea Langeliers in the Three Hole
Langeliers hitting third as the designated hitter tells you the A's want his bat in a high-leverage spot. He has pop, and Brown will have to respect it. A big night from Langeliers could be the difference in a tight game.
Zack Gelof's Production from the Five Spot
Gelof at third base and batting fifth gives Sacramento a legitimate run-producer deep in the lineup. Gelof has shown the ability to drive the ball with authority, and against a pitcher like Brown, his at-bats in the middle innings will matter.
Lopez's First-Inning Command
Against Houston, there is no easing in. If Lopez falls behind hitters early or leaves pitches over the heart of the plate, the Astros will make him pay. His first two innings will set the entire trajectory of this game for Sacramento.
Prediction
This one figures to be a pitcher's duel that hinges on one or two swings. The Astros are a disciplined, experienced club that does not beat itself. But Sutter Health Park gives Sacramento a lift, and a lineup with Bolte, Butler, Langeliers, and Gelof has enough firepower to scratch out runs. Give the edge to Houston slightly based on Brown's track record, but do not be surprised if Lopez quiets the visitors and the home crowd goes home happy. A's 4, Astros 3.
