Every start at this stage of the season is a résumé submission.

Opposing him is Reid Detmers, a crafty left-hander who relies on deception and command rather than overwhelming velocity. Detmers has the kind of profile that can make aggressive, pull-heavy lineups look foolish — and the A's will need to come in with a patient, disciplined approach if they want to get to him early and knock up his pitch count.

Angels Lineup to Watch

Los Angeles sends out a lineup that has some legitimate thunder in it. Jorge Soler hits cleanup at DH and has the kind of raw power that can change a game with one swing — Perkins cannot afford to leave anything flat in the zone when Soler steps in. Zach Neto leads off at shortstop and is one of the more complete young players in the division, capable of setting the table in a hurry. Nolan Schanuel bats third at first base and is a tough at-bat, while Logan O'Hoppe handles the catching duties and provides a legitimate offensive threat in the back half of the order. Jo Adell in right field is always a volatility factor — he can go deep or he can give the A's an out, but you never quite know which version shows up.

Keys to the Game for Sacramento

• Perkins must establish the fastball early. Getting ahead in counts against a contact-oriented lineup gives Sacramento the best chance to keep the Angels off the board in the middle innings.
• Patience against Detmers. The A's cannot chase breaking balls out of the zone. Working deep counts and forcing Detmers to come into the strike zone is the blueprint against a pitcher who lives on getting hitters to expand.
• Neutralize Soler. One mistake to the Angels cleanup hitter can derail an otherwise solid outing. Sacramento's pitching staff needs a plan — and they need to execute it.
• Capitalize on early opportunities. Late-inning runs in Anaheim can be hard to come by. If the A's get runners on early against Detmers, they have to cash them in.
